KUMANO KODO 3-Day Highlight: Pilgrimage Walks
Tour Schedule
The general schedule is to arrive from the north by train to Kii Tanabe station. From there, head east by public bus to the Hongu area. Follow along the Kumano-gawa River to the coast, then finish with a visit to Katsuura, a coastal fishing port and hot spring destination.
Day 1 : Transfer to HONGU
Arrive at & Meet with local staff for a tour orientation at Kii-Tanabe station
Transfer to Kawayu Onsen by a local bus on your own
Enjoy Kawayu Onsen, a geological wonder, where you can soak in a hot spring that bubbles up in the riverbank

Day 2 : KUMANO KODO WALK (Walking: 2~3 hr/~7.5 km/+190 m/460 m)
Hike from Hosshinmon-oji to Kumano Hongu Taisha Grand Shrine, the pinnacle of the pilgrimage.
Starting from Hosshinmon-oji to Kumano Hongu Taisha Grand Shrine, the route heads southeast with a mixture of settlements and forest trails.
Visit the small village of Hongu featuring the largest Shinto Torii gateway in Japan.
Transfer to Katsuura Onsen by a bus.
Enjoy the gifts of the Pacific Ocean with a fresh seafood dinner.

Day 3 : NACHI WALK & TRIP CONCLUSION (Walking: 1~2 hr/~3 km/+270 m/105 m)
Transfer to the base of Daimon-zaka.
Work your way up to the Nachisan Shrine Temple complex.
Nachi-no-Otaki is 133 meters high and 13 meters wide - the tallest waterfall in Japan.
Return to the seaside fishing port of Katsuura by bus where the tour ends.
