  • About "Kumano Kodo"

    KUMANO KODO

The “abode of the gods.” The southern reaches of Japan’s rugged Kii Peninsula is known as Kumano and has been a sacred site of nature worship since prehistoric times. Indigenous beliefs merged with Buddhism in the 6th century, creating a unique spiritual landscape which led to the formation of a diversity of sacred sites. These are linked by a network of pilgrimage routes now known as the Kumano Kodo.

THE KUMANO HONGU TAISHA GRAND SHRINE

One of the three grand shrines of Kumano, the Kumano Hongu Taisha Grand Shrine is also the head shrine of over 3,000 Kumano shrines across Japan.

    KUMANO NACHI TAISHA

The object of worship is a mystical cascade off a steep cliff surrounded by primeval forests. The Nachisan Shrine Temple complex has panoramic vistas across the valley to the falls. Nachisan is a wonderful example of the combination of Shinto and Buddhist faith.
